Important data on a failing drive: choosing the next step

If a drive holds the only copy of important work, pause before treating it as an ordinary PC repair. Further writes, repeated restarts, or software installed onto the affected drive may complicate the situation.

Describe what happened

Was the device dropped? Did files disappear? Does the drive repeatedly disconnect or make unusual sounds? Stop using physically damaged or unstable storage and discuss an assessment. Recovery depends on the device condition, encryption, and actions already taken.

Ask about handling and feasibility

Understand the diagnostic process, ownership checks, fees, and whether specialist laboratory work may be needed. No outcome should be promised before the condition is understood. Keep private data and recovery keys out of the public website form.

Review backup coverage afterward

When the immediate situation is resolved, identify which data lacked a usable second copy. A scoped backup and restore plan is an appropriate follow-up; it is a separate decision from recovery work.
